Ranjan Paramalingam has been in practice as an Advocate and Solicitor in Malaysia from 1976. He has an LL.B (Hons.) degree from the University of Malaya and an M.A. degree in Healthcare Ethics and Law from the University of Manchester, U.K.

He is a life member of the Royal Society of Medicine, London. He is a member of the Medico-Legal Society of London and the Medico-Legal Society of Singapore.

He has been a contributing editor to the Malayan Law Journal and a visiting lecturer to the Judicial and Legal Training Institute of Malaysia. He takes part in the activities of the charity Action against Medical Accidents (“AvMA”) in Britain and the Medical Professional Liability Association of America. He has spoken on medico-legal topics at conferences. He undertakes some teaching and training work on medico-legal matters for lawyers and healthcare practitioners. He has been an external examiner to universities on medico-legal subjects. He had attended conferences of the Royal Society of Medicine of the United Kingdom; the International Association of Forensic Sciences; and the World Congress on Medical Law on a number of occasions.

He has undertaken more than 3,000 medico-legal cases, many of which have gone to court or before tribunals. A lot of his work concerns medical, dental and hospital malpractice claims. He also advises and assists healthcare practitioners regarding ethical issues. He has also undertaken criminal and disciplinary cases involving doctors, including regarding such matters as charges of employing unauthorised persons, voluntarily causing hurt, illegal miscarriages, sexual offences, and improper certification of sick leave and medical conditions, and also defamation cases by and against doctors regarding their professional actions.

Occasionally, he has been involved in inquiries under the Criminal Procedure Code of Malaysia about "sudden" or "suspicious" deaths" arising out of hospital accidents. He has also been called upon to assist and advise patients, doctors, dentists, and hospital authorities regarding disputes between healthcare practitioners and patients, disputes between hospital managements and staff, disputes amongst healthcare practitioners, legal developments, and compliance with the statutory duties of healthcare providers. There have been cases of his concerning the protection of children, prisoners, mental patients, ill testators, and other categories of vulnerable persons. He has also undertaken employment cases and family law cases with a medical content.

He is a member of Anti Slavery International, the world's oldest human rights organisation. Nowadays, he undertakes long distance running in Malaysia and overseas, including for charitable purposes.
